Which Podcasts Do You Listen To?

best podcasts to listen to

When you go on a bike tour there tends to be a lot of time to fill where you are by yourself with nothing to do. At the end of the day, after several hours of cycling, there’s nothing better than laying down in bed and listening to a good podcast!

I’ve mentioned in several of my Bicycle Touring Pro video blogs that I enjoy listening to podcasts – both while I’m riding my bicycle during the day and at night when I settle down inside my tent. So, today I thought I’d take a moment to share some of the podcasts I enjoy listening to the most.

bicycle touring pro - my favorite podcasts

48 Hours – An in-depth approach to storytelling that takes listeners inside the most difficult crime cases and human drama. Experience the best in intriguing crime and justice cases that touch on all areas of the human experience, including greed and passion, presented by the award-winning team at CBS News.

99% Invisible99% Invisible is a podcast about the thought that goes into the things we don’t think very much about — the unnoticed architecture and design that shapes our world.

Bicycle Touring Pro – This is the official Bicycle Touring Pro podcast where I interview other bicycle travelers and talk about some of the things I’ve learned from my years of bicycle touring experiences all around the world.

CriminalCriminal is a podcast about crime. Stories of people who’ve done wrong, been wronged, or gotten caught somewhere in the middle.

Freakonomics RadioFreakonomics Radio is an award-winning economics podcast where host Stephen Dubner has surprising conversations that explore the riddles of everyday life and the weird wrinkles of human nature—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports. Dubner talks with Nobel laureates and provocateurs, social scientists and entrepreneurs — and his Freakonomics co-author Steve Levitt.

How I Built ThisHow I Built This is a podcast about innovators, entrepreneurs, and idealists, and the stories behind the movements they built. Each episode is a narrative journey marked by triumphs, failures, serendipity and insight — told by the founders of some of the world’s best known companies and brands.

InvisibiliaInvisibilia (Latin for invisible things) is about the invisible forces that control human behavior – ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions. Co-hosted by Lulu Miller, Hanna Rosin and Alix Spiegel, Invisibilia interweaves narrative storytelling with scientific research that will ultimately make you see your own life differently.

LoreLore is an award-winning, critically-acclaimed podcast about true life scary stories. Our fears have roots. Lore exposes the darker side of history, exploring the creatures, people, and places of our wildest nightmares. Because sometimes the truth is more frightening than fiction.

Mystery ShowA podcast where Starlee Kine solves mysteries. Tiny, weird, unique and silly mysteries that no other person would ever waste their time investigating. Episode #2 with Britney Spears is a must-listen!

Planet Money – The economy, explained, with stories and surprises. Imagine you could call up a friend and say, “Meet me at the bar and tell me what’s going on with the economy.” Now imagine that’s actually a fun evening. That’s what we’re going for at Planet Money.

RadiolabRadiolab is a show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience.

StartUp Podcast – A podcast series about what it’s really like to start a business. If you’re self-employed or an entrepreneur, then this podcast will be both informative and inspiring.

Strangers – Each episode of Strangers is an empathy shot in your arm, featuring true stories about about the people we meet, the connections we make, the heartbreaks we suffer, the kindnesses we encounter, and those frightful moments when we discover that we aren’t even who we thought we were.

Terrible, Thanks For Asking – You know how every day someone asks, “How are you?” And even if you’re totally dying inside, you just say, “Fine” so everyone can go about their day? This show is the opposite of that. This is a funny/sad/uncomfortable podcast about talking honesty about our pain, our awkwardness, and our humanness (which is not an actual word).

The MothThe Moth podcast features our favorite stories told live on Moth stages around the country. Moth stories are true, as remembered by the storyteller and always told live.

This American Life – There’s a theme to each episode of This American Life, and a variety of stories on that theme. Most of the stories are journalism, with an occasional comedy routine or essay thrown in for good measure and variety.

Twenty Thousand Hertz – You may not think about the sounds you hear every day, but somebody has. The voice in your phone, the effects in your video games, that drum machine in your favorite song. There are people – and stories – behind every one of them.

Why Oh Why – Andrea Silenzi speaks with friends, experts, and guys in bars about where love, dating and sex meets technology. The show tells the stories about relationships by blurring the lines between memoir, documentary and fiction.

The Forward podcast is my favorite. Like Lance Armstrong or not, he does a great job interviewing a variety of great guests. Most not related to cycling.
