An Encounter With Wild Horses

May 12, 2009 by Darren Alff

On April 19, 2009, I went for a hike in the mountains above Orebic, Croatia. High up in the hills I encountered a pack of horses and mules.

If you watch the video above, you can see that I am pretty frightened of the animals at first. I’m acting this way because where I live in Utah there are moose that roam wild in the mountains near my home. The moose look very much like horses, but when you get too close to a moose they actually charge at you… and you can really get hurt if that happens. It isn’t the antlers of the moose that do the most damage, however, it’s actually their feet! When they charge at you, they knock you to the ground and then step on you with their legs. It’s not a good situation to be in! So when I first saw these horse roaming in the mountains, I treated them in just the same way I would if I were to encounter a group of wild moose.

In the end, one of the smaller horses and a mule came over to visit me. I think they just wanted my food. And once I gave them each a cookie, they wouldn’t leave me alone. They followed me on the trail for quite a distance before finally leaving me be and heading off in the other direction to join the rest of their friends.
