April 2009: The Month In Review
May 1, 2009 by Darren Alff
The past month has been active one for the Bicycle Touring Pro.
I posted 11 new articles, launched the new and improved bicycle touring store, added more than 300 new photos to the site, and revealed the new “Lifestyle” section of the website which will profile my own bicycle touring adventures and those of others doing amazing things in the world of bicycle travel.
On the first of the month I usually send an email to my newsletter readers, highlighting the monthly activity on the website, but this month there was so much going on that there was no way I could possibly fit it all in an email. So instead, I’ve decided to highlight some of the recent activity on BicycleTouringPro.com here in this post.
Here are some of the main things you should know about:
“The Lifestyle” Section Makes Its Premiere
Around the beginning of the month I released an entirely new section of BicycleTouringPro.com called “The Lifestyle”. My plan for this area of the website is to share my own bicycle touring adventures with you… and to share some of the amazing people, places, and products that are relevant to the world of bicycle travelers.
I’ll talk more about “The Lifestyle” in a future article, but for now, I recommend you head over to the new lifestyle section of the site and check out some of the new content for yourself.
Want a taste of “The Lifestyle”? Check out the following articles:
- Getting Mail In Croatia
- Skiing In Switzerland
- We Are The Tide: Blind Pilot’s West Coast Bike Tour
- French Couple Riding Bikes From France To India
- Copenhagen Cycle Chic – City Of Cyclists Music Video
The New And Improved Bicycle Touring Store Is Finally Released
If you are looking for panniers, handlebar bags, mirrors, or any other necessary product for your upcoming bicycle adventure, I recommend you head over to the new and improved bicycle touring store.
The products you find in the store are products I actually use and recommend. I want to make sure I’m providing my readers with the best products available, so the items you find in the store and products I’ve actually tested, used, and recommend with confidence.
If you have a bike tour coming up this summer and you still need to get the gear for your adventure, head on over to the new and improved bicycle touring store.
New Articles You Should Know About
There were a ton of new articles this month as well. Rather than list them all, here are the ones I highly recommend you read – if you haven’t done so already.
- Kevin Ricker Changes Course While Cycling Japan
- The Cost Of Travel In Switzerland, Germany And Austria
- Could Bicycle Travel Be The New Snowboarding
- Do You Have To Be A “Cycling Nut” In Order To Travel By Bike

What’s In Store For Next Month?
While April has been an extremely busy month, don’t expect May to be any less exciting.
Many of you will be departing on your bike tours in May and others will just be beginning to think about what needs to be done for your trips in June, July, and August.
If you need additional assistance in planning your tour, be sure to grab a copy of “The Bicycle Traveler’s Blueprint“.
And if you’re just here to learn more, get inspired, and dream of life on the road, then May should be a great month for you here at BicycleTouringPro.com.
This month I plan to release information on the best bicycle touring pannies, a full review of the Bike Friday New World Tourist, a riveting essay on “The New Generation Of Bicycle Travelers”… and a whole lot more!
I’ve got a lot planned… but I want to hear from you!
What kind of questions do you have about bicycle touring? What sort of stories would you like to see here on the site? And how can I made the information I deliver each month better and better?
If you have any ideas, suggestions, or comments, please leave a message for me below. I appreciate any constructive criticism you might have for me. After all, this is a work in process… and my hope is that as time goes by, the content here on BicycleTouringPro.com will constantly improve.
Thanks again for being a part of my little bicycle touring community… and I’ll talk with you soon!
Make it a great week!

You have posted some great articles over the past month so I am very much looking forward to what you have in store for this next month.
There are two topics that I think might be interesting. One is an article about alternative touring bikes. I mean recumbents, and suchlike. I feel recumbents have a bit of an old blokes bike image but there must be lots of younger people riding them, and if not it would be good to use this site to introduce more people to the new and cool designs out there now rather that some of the old/goofy ones of the past few years. (I don’t mean any disrespect to old blokes or those riding old recumbents by the way).
Another topic I would like to hear your thoughts and those of others on is how to stay motivated and keep up the enjoyment on a long tour. I am about to set of on my first tour and I am sure there will be times when I feel like packing it in and getting a flight home. I would like to know how to get over these periods.
I am sure whatever will write about it will be interesting.
Happy cycling.

Andy, some great ideas. Thank you!
I already have plans for articles on folding bikes and recumbents made for touring… and those should come out in the next month or two.
As for an article on how to stay motivated when times get rough, that’s a great idea. I know a lot of people, myself included, reach a point when traveling where they just want to pack it up and go home. I’ll write something up on this…. and offer some ideas on how to get over such difficulties.
Thank you!
