Graffiti From Athens, Greece
October 21, 2009 by Darren Alff
Here are nearly 40 different photos of graffiti and street art from the city of Athens, Greece.

I didn’t notice it at the time, but looking back at the artwork now I can see a large percentage of the work referencing fire in the city. This is important to note because just a few months before I arrived in Greece there were arson crimes committed that burned a significant portion of the city. The arson and subsequent street riots prompted police and fire personnel to be positioned at various locations throughout the city. Then, while I was there in Athens (during August and September of 2009) there were a number of large fires just outside the city, which destroyed hundreds of acres and killed over 60 people. The police presence was extraordinarily high when I was in the city of Athens, and seeing officers armed with riot gear and machine guns was certainly not something I expected.
