I remember my first bicycle race back in the early 80's and I wore a pair of cut off Bike baseball pants for my shorts, a tee shirt, and a ball cap. I rode a Schwinn La Tour bike and had a blast loosing! Now I have all the shorts and jerseys I need and a full carbon bike and guess what, I still have a blast loosing! I wear what I like and so should you. The fun is in the adventure of riding your bike from point A to point B. Just wear clothing that is safe and can be seen easily.

Well, I think everything is pretty optional, except cycling shorts. I can't imagine riding without them. I did try during one tour to wear ordinary shorts, but after 1 day of that, I went back to cycling shorts. My butt needs all the help it can get. If regular clothes are not uncomfortable for you, by all means wear them. It certantly simplifies packing too.

Darren - You are right on with the change of cycling clothing. I, too, went wild with all the sleek cycling clothes, and, after two years, have no desire to wear form fitting clothes. I love my mountain cycling shorts with pockets and bright colored wicking t-shirts. Your site is great. Thanks.

So much of the bicycle industry seems to be geared toward racers, where clothes need to be reduced as much as possible to minimalize wind shear. I don't race, and I would never stuff these legs in those lycra shorts, sorry! Maybe some of those space age materials dry faster and wick sweat better, but a nice cotton shirt is hard to beat, in my opinion. (And a lot cheaper!)

Thanks for confirming my feelings about bicycle clothing. I love this site!

Most cycling clothing serves only one purpose, to get you from point A to point B efficiently. Bicycle touring clothing must serve two purposes, of course the A to B thing, but also to get you into and out of Bubba Dukes Feed and Seed Store without getting beat up or offending the local church ladies.

Great post, Jack
