Biking For Invisible Children

May 10, 2009 by

Kristen DeMint and Mark Kowalik are set to graduate from Colorado State University in Fort Collins this month. Immediately following their graduation, they plan to gear up and ride bikes across America in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Invisible Children Organization.

Invisible Children is an organization that looks to create international attention on the 23-year-old civil war that has been occurring in Northern Uganda, which has displaced around 2 million Uganda people from their homes and families. The organization places an emphasis on rescuing N. Ugandan children abducted by a rebel army called Lord Resistance Army. Throughout the years this rebel army has abducted 30,000 Ugandan children that have been raped, tortured, and brainwashed to become killing machines. Currently, there are still 3,000 Child Soldiers that need to be rescued so they can return back to their families.

By cycling across America, Kristen and Mark hope to raise $10,000 for Invisible Children’s Schools For Schools Program. The program is the largest-scale project to date addressing Northern Uganda’s need for improved learning environments. By holistically rebuilding 10 of the most promising secondary schools in the region, the Invisible Children Organization is looking beyond the temporary fix of simply putting kids in classrooms, but instead putting them in classrooms that will better prepare them for their future and the future of their country.
