How Adults Can Discover More Fun In Their Lives
November 23, 2008 by Darren Alff · Leave a Comment
The article above is an excerpt from Ted Schredd’s “Gramma Knows the F word.”

There are more than six billion people on this planet so there are probably six billion different definitions of exactly what fun is. The activities that a thirty-year-old Democratic web designer from New York considers fun will be much different from that of a sixty-two-year-old Republican farmer from Arizona. Fun is a noun, a verb and an adjective.
The dictionary refers to it as playfulness, merry play or amusement. For me, having fun merely means creating more opportunities to experience joyful feelings. Fun is a way to expand your happiness levels to the maximum. It’s an emotional, mental and physical ritual that will bring more joy into your daily life. When you are experiencing fun, you are living in the moment and expressing your spirit to the world. Fun keeps your blood pumping and magnifies your zest for living. Read more

Poor & Happy: Why Money Does Not Equal Happiness
November 22, 2008 by Darren Alff · 7 Comments
Growing up in California, I was led to believe that having a big house, a fancy car, and a flat screen TV was what you were supposed to strive for as an adult. The bigger the house you had, the more successful you were and the more respected you would be within your community. That’s what I believed at least, until I started bicycle touring.
As a youth in California, I didn’t get out much. I was extremely shy and deathly afraid of strangers. So when, at the age of 16, I told my parents I wanted to ride my bicycle down the California Coastline, they were more than a bit concerned. Read more

Adventure Cycling Association Helps Head U.S. National Bike Route System
November 22, 2008 by Darren Alff · Leave a Comment
Most of us know that cycling in America is not as popular as it is in many other parts of the world. In my mind at least, much of that has to do with our lack of established cycling routes which would allow riders of all ages, levels, and types to get from one place to the next. While established signed routes do exist in small segments, the United States is years behind other countries who have long ago established dedicated routes for traveling cyclists.
According to the Adventure Cycling Association, a plan to create a national system of bicycle routes covering more than 50,000 miles of roads and trails is gathering steam. The idea behind this national network is to create a system of signed bicycle routes that cross state borders and connects urban, rural and suburban regions. Ultimately, this network of cycling routes would allow a cyclist to ride from his or her house to just about anywhere in the country!
With the onset of such exciting news, I had the pleasure of talking to the Adventure Cycling Association’s New Route Coordinator, Ginny Sullivan, and asked her about how the idea for this National Network came about and what it means for cyclists throughout North America. The Road To Freedom Through Unconventional Living
November 22, 2008 by Darren Alff · Leave a Comment
The following is by Chris Guillebeau.
My memories of bicycling are relatively few, but they include a head concussion, a broken arm, and most recently, being the victim of a bike theft that happened in the middle of the day right outside the bike shop. With those events in mind, I’m probably not the best person to talk to you about bicycling or bikes.
My track record with other issues is better: in my quest to visit every country in the world, I’ve made it to more than 100 so far. I’ve been self-employed my entire life (I’m 30 years old now, so there’s no turning back), and I’ve racked up a good track record fighting authority and bureaucracy from college completion to non-profit leadership.
That’s who I am in a nutshell, but enough about me — let’s talk about you. Make no mistake, the greatest thing about working for yourself, or any kind of unconventional living, is freedom. No matter what your personal goals are or how you plan to take over the world, I recommend you ask yourself one question: Read more
