Is there a better time of the year to do such a tour?

I would suggest a tour in this part of the world in either the spring or fall. Winter is extremely cold (with chances of ice and snow) and summers can be extremely hot (with temperatures in excess of 100 degrees F). Spring and fall would be the most comfortable time of year in this part of the world, but the weather (even during these times of year) can be rainy, with thunderstorms, lightning, etc. If I were to do a similar route myself, I would do it in early fall.
