How To Travel The Adriatic On $1,000 USD Per Month

June 9, 2009 by Darren Alff

May was my fifth month in Europe. I’ve been traveling around on my bicycle, renting apartments in various cities along the way, and having the time of my life!

At the end of each month I total up my travel expenses and share them with you. The goal here is to show just how inexpensive world travel can be.

To view the previous four months of expenditures see: January, February, March, & April

I didn’t travel far this month, however I did cross from Croatia into Montenegro and had a great little bike ride along the way. Click here to see photos from the trip.

I spent the first half of the month in Orebic, Croatia where I was renting a small one-bedroom apartment on the third story of a private home just a couple hundred meters from the coast.

Then, on the 12th of May, I left Orebic and traveled for three days by bike down the Peljesac Peninsula and crossed the border into Montenegro. My second day in Montenegro was spent cycling around the Bay of Kotor, before arriving at the “luxury business” apartment that would be my home for the second half of the month.

Below are my expenses from the month of May:

Lodging

  • Orebic, Croatia Apartment – $426.38 USD
  • Croatia Campground – 30 Kuna ($5.83 USD)
  • Herceg Novi, Montenegro Apartment + Breakfast 30 Euros ($42.81 USD)
  • Tivat, Montenegro Apartment – $356.72 USD

Food

  • Groceries – $131.54 USD
  • Crotian Pizza – 40 Kuna ($7.78 USD)
  • 3 Montenegro Pizzas – 17.10 Euros ($24.40 USD)

Transportation

  • Roundtrip Bus From Tivat To Kotor, Montenegro – 3 Euros ($4.28 USD)

Entertainment

  • Entrance to the Kotor Fortress – 2 Euros ($2.86 USD)

TOTAL FOR THE MONTH: $1,002.60
