Make Money And Do What You Love: The Unconventional Guide To Art And Money
May 31, 2009 by Darren Alff
After graduating from film school in late 2004, I immediately jumped into the Southern California production world. I was working on film and TV sets nearly 20 hours a day, making no money and quickly losing my passion for the art of film and television production.
It was then that I realized the skills we (myself and my fellow film students) had learned in film school, which taught us how to be filmmakers, had not taught us how to be businessmen… and that the most important skills needed to find work and succeed in the film and television industry actually involved traits we had never even touched on in our schooling.
Many artists feel this same way after receiving their university training. They may have received the skills needed to start an art career, but they have no clue how to go from starving artist to successful art entrepreneur.
I produced a book called “Film School & Beyond” about this very thing in 2006 and while the book has quickly become out of date, Chris Guillebeau , the man behind The Art Of Non-Conformity, has just released a new guide for artists looking to financially succeed with their craft. He calls it, “The Unconventional Guide To Art & Money.”
But why in the world am I mentioning this on a site about bicycle touring and world travel?
I bring it up because almost everyone who comes to BicycleTouringPro.com is looking for a way to work less and play more. And if you’re an artist (of any type), what better way to work less and play more than actually make money from your art, feel good about it, and build up a following to support your independent career.
