Memorial Day In Montenegro
May 26, 2009 by Darren Alff

One of the things I love about traveling is when I get the opportunity to be in a totally different place and see how people there celebrate holidays and special occasions.
Yesterday was Memorial Day in the United States, and so it was a surprise to me when, at 10 PM last night, I heard fireworks shooting off in the distance.
I had just finished cooking my dinner, but I ran outside, heard music playing and immediately knew that there was some sort of celebration taking place. So I downed my pasta dinner, grabbed my two cameras and ran into downtown Tivat.
There, I found a couple thousand people out on the dock, surrounding a large stage that had been set up. On stage were a number of young singers – people I would guess were on the Montenegro, Bosnia or Serbian version of “American Idol”.
The video below shows just two of the songs performed.
The music sounded a lot better in person than it does in the video. And even though I couldn’t understand most of the lyrics, I still had a great time.
It’s moments like this that I usually end up remembering most from my bicycle travels.
