The Diversity Of The Austrian Bicycle Culture

June 10, 2009 by

Having come from Switzerland, the diversity in Austria seemed incredibly immense – Not only in the people, but in the bicycles as well.

The following are just a few of the bicycle related photos I snapped while cycling through Austria in March and April of 2009. Most of these photos were taken in either Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck.

Nice! I love bike culture, its not just for the ones that think they’re “Cool”, its for all of us.

Amazing how European’s seem to have it all together with cycling compared to us North-Americans. What I mean is their bicycles are practical, made for daily use, commuting and errands. We have “sport” bicycles used for weekend warrior activities. I had to “Europize” my bicycle and put fenders on it, a rack and bags, lights, a bell and pump for commuting. It is an old mountain bike, came with no fenders, no rack no nothing. I know that there are some good commuting bicycles available at local bike shops but they are few and far between. Time to educate America and Canada what makes sense in a bicycle.

    Cheers,
    Marc

I agree Marc. I think we North Americans still see cycling as a “sport.” Whereas most people in Europe see the cycling as something they do as part of their “lifestyle.”
