The Food I’m Craving Now
April 30, 2008 by Darren Alff
Food is an important part of any bike trip, and with a lot of time to just sit and think, it’s easy to become obsessed about food when traveling by bike.On every bike trip I’ve ever taken, there has always been one particular food item that I crave more than anything else. And that one item always seems to change from trip to trip.
For example, on my first tour down the coast of California I was craving ice cream like crazy. Whenever I had an opportunity to purchase an ice cream cone or half-gallon of ice cream, I’d stop get it! I’m an ice cream-aholic
Then on my second tour of the TransAm, it was Gatorade that seemed to be calling my name. Some days all I had to eat or drink for the entire day was a gallon or two of Gatorade.
On my third tour up the East Coast of the United States, it was Pizza Hut that I was stalking. At the time, Pizza Hut had a lunch buffet where you could stop in between 12 and 2 PM and eat as much salad and pizza as you could fit inside your stomach. What they didn’t know was that I hadn’t eaten in three days and I was determined to get my money’s worth. Frankly, they didn’t know what hit them! At a Pizza Hut in New Jersey I paid $5.30 for my lunch buffet and subsequently ate two large pizzas in a single sitting. I nearly puked it all up again as soon as I tried to get back on my bike, but boy was it worth it!
On my fourth tour down the Mississippi River I was craving Subway sandwiches and my fifth tour through Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia had me dreaming about bean and cheese burritos.
You see… there is always one particular food item that I seem to be thinking about when I travel by bike. And it’s never the exact same food. It seems to change from trip to trip.

All this food talk has made me hungry. I’m going to go eat some french fries.

i know the feeling me and my friend lived on cream of wheat and spaghetti (no sauce but eventually got “i cant believe its not butter”) for days on end. then we got a great tip from another biker, those simple bagged salads and a can of tuna, (its nice to eat vegetables every once in a while).
