Reader Poll: Video Production And The Global Economy

March 21, 2009 by

Hello everyone! I have two quick questions for you… and if you have a second, I’d appreciate it if you could help me out by simply leaving a comment/suggestion below.

1) First of all, I want to make some “how to” type videos for you about bicycle touring, world travel, and/or lifestyle design. I’ve made a number of videos in the past… and my video on “How To Pack Your Panniers” is still one of the most popular items on the website. But now I want to make some new videos and I’d like to know what it is exactly that you’d like to see. So my question to you is this: “What type of videos would you like to see on BicycleTouringPro.com?”

2) Secondly, there’s been a lot of talk about the global economy over the past few months. I can hardly make a call back to the United States without being reminded about the current economic downturn. And then today I received an email from a BicycleTouringPro.com reader who wanted to know what the attitude of the European people was on the issue of the global economy. “What are their fears? What’s going on in the streets? How do they feel about America?” he asked. While I have my own opinions on the matter (and while I may share these at some point in the future), I’d be more interested in hearing what you have to say. So, what do you think about the current economic situation? Is it affecting the way you live your life? Do you see the effects of the economy in your community? And will the “recession” keep you from traveling this summer?

Let me know the answer to either one or both of these questions below. And if you leave a comment about the recession, be sure to mention where you are in the world.

Thanks so much… and I look forward to your responses!

Being new to touring, I’m not sure I would make a request for material yet, not until I get some silly mistakes under my belt and can refine what I need to know.

regarding the second question: I live in the US where the economic situation is obviously affecting many. I recently moved to a ski town in Colorado. usually this town has more jobs than people, and this is the first year where it was really competitive to get a job. Luckily I found a job, a cheap apartment ,and have plenty to get by. By not having any debt, and being good with money, I don’t have very much stress. I don’t have a fancy job ,just work at a mexican restaurant about 25 hrs a week, but it’s no problem.

I plan to take a month and a half starting in mid april to do a 1,600 mile bike tour loop thru colorado and utah. Again…it’s almost like I don’t even feel the economic downturn here, although felt it when moving here by the fact that it was EXTREMELY difficult to find a job in a small town. Also, many businesses are hurting in a tourist area since people aren’t traveling as much. Still…I feel really lucky to be able to live without needing much.

hope others are handling it well.

As someone who has been touring for a few years now, I would be more interested in destinations. I’m more interested in people and places than the actual nuts and bolts of touring.

    You’re doing a great job,
    Jack

The current economic situation is it affecting the way I live my life. I am fearful of losing my job and then in turn not being able to make the house payment. I have always had enough money in the bank to cover six months of living, but the high prices of virtually everything (basic necessities, food, gas, heat, ect.) has been greatly deleting my accounts. I am basically now living paycheck to paycheck, but I do feel lucky because many are way worse off than me. I am back to bike commuting to work, I am more conscious of recycling and preserving energy at home and work, I don’t go out to many places any more. If I go out to eat with friends, I split a meal with them. I am not planning on any traveling (by car or plane) vacations this year due to the recession, but I am planning on going on my first supported bike tour this summer for my vacation and I am so excited about it. I am also very interested in hearing what you have to say about the attitude of the European people on the issue of the global economy. Thanks for all you do to pass on information to others Darren.

I want to see where you are in Vienna. I hear it is a beautiful city.

It would be great to have some features about self-contained bike touring in Europe. How to afford to travel in tough economic times. Show people how to stretch their dollar and still get a satisfying cultural and recreational experience. Topics: Cheep airfare, integrating your bike with Europe’s public transportation, campgrounds and stealth camping, going light weight, when to go (off season?). Info on bike touring Europe seems to be dominated by supported / catered touring companies. You could fill the void by sharing your experience of how to do it yourself.
