YAKKAY: Stylish Bicycle Helmets For Smart People
November 22, 2008 by Darren Alff

The main reason for wearing a helmet is to protect your head. But that doesn’t mean you have to comprimise the way you look in order to wear a helmet. If you are one of those people who don’t want to give up your personal safety but want to look good at the same time, a YAKKAY bicycle helmet might be right for you!
YAKKAY is a Danish company that develops, produces and markets high quality products to people who appreciate safety and style.
YAKKAY’s unique concept for bicycle helmets is the first where safety requirements and style are united and equally valued.
What’s so neat about YAKKAY helmets is that they come in four different styles. The covers are interchangable and they come in a variety of different colors, so matching your outfit for the day couldn’t be easier. And what’s even better is that you don’t have to purchase a new helmet for each of your outfits. The helmet covers simply slip over the top of the helmet, so you just purchase the covers you want and use the single black helmet to match your style for the day (Watch the video below to see exactly how this works).

Fantastic!
Nice idea. As long as they offer the same level of protection as ‘utilitarian’ helmets then that can only be a good thing. Be interesting to see their sales figures/demographics.
YAKKAY just sent me the following press release with some great news for the company. Here it is:
The recently established Danish bicycle helmet manufacturer YAKKAY has received the international IF Design Award.
The award, which is given once every year in Germany and is judged by an international jury of 28 persons, is regarded as one of the most prestigious in the world.
“We’re very proud of this award”, says Michael Eide, CEO of the company, which produces fashionable bicycle helmets with covering that makes them look like caps or sunhats.
YAKKAY’s helmets, which are created by a group of Denmark’s most acknowledged industrial designers, first caught international attention earlier this year when the rumour of their new trendy helmet spread like wildfire over the internet. “Within 24 hours we had 15.000 hits on our web site http://www.YAKKAY.com and an overwhelming amount of offers for international distribution”, says Michael Eide.
Today, the company exports to a number of European countries and the demand is increasing rapidly.
“We have undoubtedly hit the right spot”, he says. With the new design award in the can, it seems he might be right.
I think the YAKKAY bike helmet is a fabulous idea. Promoting safety thru style is a sure winner. I’ d like the folks at YAKKAY to start recommending to their customers to keep the helmet on too while their in the car. Studies in Australia have conclude that a bike helmet worn in the car would cut brain injuries by 50% and save 1 in 5 crash victims. Furthermore they proclaimed that wearing a helmet in the car is a far superior form of protection surpassing both seat belts and air bags. My recommendation is to use all three but also very important reduce your speed 10km per hour. Any activity involving speed with the possibility of abrupt, uncontrolled stops needs head protection.
