The Great Geysir

Geysir is one of Iceland’s most famous and photographed tourist attractions. Also known as “The Great Geysir,” it was the first geyser to ever be recorded in print and for its existence to be known to the European population. In fact, the English word geyser (a spouting hot spring) is derived from the Geysir in Iceland. The name Geysir itself is derived from the Icelandic work geysa, which means “to gush.”

There is a smaller geyser at Geysir, Iceland that erupts every six minutes or so. But the larger and more famous Great Geysir erupts infrequently and is seen by few tourists – including myself and Brandon.

Having been to Yellowstone National Park in the United States, I found Geysir, Iceland to be somewhat of a disappointment, but it was still a fun thing to stop and see on our travels and I would recommend it to anyone who has never seen a geyser in real life.
