Before leaving Lake Rausor in the mountains of Romania, I spent a little time cycling around the western edge of the lake on a rocky and muddy dirt road. Here are a few pics from the ride.

Hi Darren
am new to cycling and have only cycled short tours (2/3 days) so far.
I am making a set of front and rear panniers.
I see from your photos that the rear are set quite high on your rack.
Is this your preference? and why?
I was under the impression that the lower center of gravity, the better for stability.
Love your posts on facebook, blog and website.
So inspiring.
Keep well.
Regards
The height of your rear panniers just depends on the type of rack you are using. The panniers seem high in my photos, mainly because the front panniers are much lower. But you don’t feel the height at all when you are riding.
You do, however, want to pack your panniers with the items that weight the most at the bottom of the panniers and the lighter items on top. See this article I wrote for the Adventure Cycling Association: https://blog.adventurecycling.org/2009/12/7-secrets-to-successfully-packing-your.html
I took the photos myself. I just used the camera’s 10-second timer.
