Bulgarian Bicycle Touring In Bulgaria

While cycling along the shore of the Black Sea in Varna, Bulgaria I ran into this man from Sophia, Bulgaria, who told me (in Bulgarian (I could barely understand him)) that he was traveling around Bulgaria with his bicycle for several weeks and camping along the way. He wanted to know where I was from and where I had cycled from, but it was kind of hard to explain.

Which brings up a question: Why are country names different depending on which languageĀ  you are speaking? Why can’t “Germany” always be “Germany.” Instead, it’s “Germany” to some of us and “Deutschland” to the rest. Why is that?
