Hi. My name is Darren Alff… and for the last 18 years I have been traveling around the world on my bicycle. I’ve pedaled by bike hundreds of thousands of miles/kilometers and I’ve ridden across dozens of different countries on multiple continents all around the world. In fact, I’ve cycled across every country in Europe […]
In his 90-minute documentary movie, Pedal The World, German-born Felix Starck sets out from home and pedals a bicycle more than 18,000 kilometers through 22 countries in just 365 days. Watch the trailer… and then read my detailed review of the movie below. Bicycle touring is often a personal endeavor. You don’t do it for […]
The last 12 months have been amazing. I attended the Sundance Film Festival, saw some of my favorite musicians perform live (including A Fine Frenzy and Nellie McKay), rode a motorcycle across the Western United States and conducted a 10-month-long bicycle tour across 20 European countries. In this article I aim to summarize my thoughts […]
2012 was a truly incredible year! Here’s just a small taste of what I did: Spent 4 months skiing at North America’s #1 ski resort – Deer Valley. Watched 12 amazing movies at the Sundance Film Festival. Saw more than a dozen famous musicians perform, including A Fine Frenzy, Lisa Hannigan, Nellie McKay, Flying Lotus, […]
Earlier this year, Bicycle Touring Pro awarded its annual scholarship, a financial boost for young people heading out on their first bicycle tour, to 24 year old Polish-Canadian cyclist Kasia Szewczyk. Kasia’s plan was to cycle across Europe, from Barcelona, Spain to Istanbul, Turkey, combining her first ever bike tour with a fund raising project […]
Leaving Turkey was an uphill battle – literally! It was a long, windy, uphill climb to the Bulgarian border crossing. Before reaching the top of the hill and the end of my Turkish bicycle touring adventure, however, I stopped by the side of the road, set up my camera and tripod, and snapped these two […]
As I neared the Turkey/Bulgaria border, I began to see signs for “Bulgaristan.” Before this moment I had no idea that people in Turkey referred to their neighboring country of “Bulgaria as “Bulgaristan.” Have you ever heard of Bulgaristan before?
It took me four days to cycle from my apartment in Istanbul to this isolated location south of Kirklareli, Turkey, where I spent the night camped out in my tent and was able to watch the sun set from my perch atop a nearby rock pile.
I spent my first five nights on the road stealth camping in the wilds of northern Turkey. This particular campsite was one of my favorites because it was located off a small road situated directly above the main highway I had been cycling on all day. The small gravel road used to be the main […]
The more I travel and experience new places, the more I realize what I like and what I don’t. I’m not a beach person, but I love the mountains and the deserts. For whatever reason, I just feel happy when I am out in nature, alone, and in a place where I can’t see another […]
During my last night in Turkey, I camped on a abandoned hillside covered in trees and before going to sleep climbed up to the top of the rock-covered mountain nearby to watch the sky turn orange as the sun set far off in the distance.
This moment right here is one of the things I love most about riding a bicycle. When your left foot pushes the pedal down and your right foot leaves the ground. In an instant you are up on the bike and moving down the road. Lift off!!!
